He graduated from the University of Crete in 1988 with a Diploma in Computer Science and obtained his PhD from the Department of Informatics, University of Athens in 1995. Dr. C. Mourlas joined the Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus as Lecturer from 1999 till 2002. In 1998 was an ERCIM fellow for post-doctoral studies through research.

His research interests focus mainly on the study of intelligent systems and more specifically on adaptive and personalized communication and learning environments. The user profile that is shaped by users’ particular cognitive and perceptual features as well as the ability of an intelligent environment to tailor its content and functionality to the characteristics of each user is a key area of research.

Recently, special emphasis has been given on research related to information retrieval, processing and visualization, pattern recognition, and the extraction of information hidden in a very large volume of data, either structured, semi-structured or even unstructured. Programming languages ??such as Python and R, machine learning algorithms for classification, extraction and retrieval, as well as natural language processing algorithms for retrieving opinions and emotional tendency of large amounts of user generated content are the focus of research, as a new and active field of data and computational journalism.

His research work (more than 80 papers) has been published in international conferences and scientific journals as well as in chapters of books of a broader scientific field, and has been a scientific supervisor in over 20 research and development projects in his area of expertise.
